Virginia Beach, VA: It was a really nice morning (55, sunny, windy) for running. I ran down along the beach and it was great to be able to watch the sun coming up over the ocean. I had a hard time getting going this morning just felt kind of sluggish but felt better as I went along. There were quite a few people out this morning which was nice. I normally don't see any other runners when I am running at home since I ususally run along country roads.

Except for the shifting sand beneath your feet, it's pretty nice to run along the beach. Makes it seem more fun when you see others out there enjoying the morning.

Keep plugging away. You have a great week started.

Nice run in a nice location.

Hey, do you know anything about the Indianapolis Marathon in October? I am thinking about running it if we come back to visit family in Shelbyville. Just thought I would ask a locals opinion.

Jim,

Nice start to the week and way to get in those travelling miles.

Jeff, looking to win a masters?

From jtshad on Wed, May 13, 2009 at 09:40:44 from 204.134.132.225

Hoping to have a shot to win it outright. Last year's winning time was 2:37 which I believe I am capable of running.

Jeff, I ran the Indianapolis Marathon as my first marathon. It is a smaller marathon with maybe 1000 to 1500 runners. They do run a half marathon in conjuction with this race so there will be mixed in for the first 12 miles before they break off to the finish. I think the half runners have different bibs so you should be able to tell who they are. The course is pretty fast. It is mostly flat with a couple of hills at 10 and 24 miles. They are probably not much compared to what you are used to. The course runs mostly through a state park so some areas will be on walking trails (paved) but since their are not many people there is plenty of room. The weather is usually good that time of the year. I have ran the marathon once and the half twice and it has always been in the 40's or 50's. I think one year it was colder but still good. I think that you would have an excellent chance of winning this race. I know you have family in the area but I only live about 15 min from the race location so if you decide to run it and need anything while you are here I would be glad to help. I have room if you need a place to stay or if you need someone to run you around. It would be cool to have a FBR member going for the win. Just let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks for the info and your offers. I know that you live very close (Shelbyville is not that far either) so it would be great to meet you if we come (90% sure right now). I will be in touch!

Hope you get/got home safely.

Jeff/Jim,

Jealous...my sister lives in West Lafayette and I hoped to run this event next Fall. However, due to a conflicting family event, will probably not make it there until 2010.

It would be very cool to see Jeff win.

Lots of Indiana connections on the blog...

If I go, I will do my best and know I can be competitive, but in the last 2 years picking marathons I seem to end up running the races the year the "really fast" guys show up (e.g. Disneyworld, Shamrock Sportsfest).

From dutterman on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 16:16:10 from 160.33.98.118

Any of you guys going to be Masters runners that day?

From jtshad on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 16:17:56 from 204.134.132.225

Which day, in 2009 or 2010? I am already in the "old man" category now.

From dutterman on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 16:19:09 from 160.33.98.118

Oh.. 2009! I'll be running my first marathon as a Masters this Fall.

From rockness18 on Thu, May 14, 2009 at 20:49:26 from 75.9.135.162

I'll be joining you soon...still have another year until 40.

Jeff, you're due to be the fast guy this time.

From JimF on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 07:49:13 from 67.173.26.217

Unfortunately I have you all beat. I turn 44 tomorrow. Crazy thing is that around here it seems to get more competitive in the age groups when you turn 40. I ran a race a few months ago and got 3rd in the 40-44 age group and would have won the 30-34 age group. I have noticed this a few times where I would have finished higher in the younger age groups. Not sure what that is all about but a lot of guys seem to get serious again as they approach 40.

From rockness18 on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 10:00:33 from 75.11.51.133

Yeah, I agree. I'm at the point in which I have a shot at placing in my age group locally (30-39). However, there are 3-5 guys in our area who would currently drop me down a few notches unless I improve by age 40 (that is for 5k-10k distances). My recent 3rd place finish in a 5-miler would have put me in 5th for the 40-49 age group. Yet I'm counting on them to keep getting older and slower as I improve :)

From jtshad on Fri, May 15, 2009 at 10:43:21 from 204.134.132.225

Happy Birthday, Jim!

Nationally at the marathon distance, 40-44 is just slightly less competitive than 35-39 (by just a hair). A Master's guy just ran 3:57 at a race earlier this year in Boston...dang! Plus, the Master's winner at Boston was 2:14! There are some fast old guys out there!
